A fiery exchange erupted between Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) during a House Oversight Committee meeting on Tuesday, highlighting the intensifying political and cultural divisions within Congress. The dispute centered on civil rights and transgender rights, culminating with Rep. Mace challenging Rep. Crockett by asking whether she wanted to “take it outside.”
The Exchange That Sparked Controversy
The contentious discussion began as Rep. Jasmine Crockett advocated for re-establishing a subcommittee on civil rights and criticized Rep. Nancy Mace’s outspoken stance on transgender issues.
“I can see that somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now. So [Mace] is gonna keep saying ‘trans, trans, trans, trans’ so that people will feel threatened, and child, listen—” Crockett remarked, questioning Mace’s motives.
This drew a sharp response from Mace, who interjected with, “I am no child, do not call me a child, I am no child.”
Despite attempts by Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) to restore order, the verbal sparring continued. Mace’s infamous retort, “If you want to take it outside, we can do that,” was perceived by some as a challenge to escalate the matter physically.
Defensive Responses on Social Media
The confrontation quickly spilled onto social media, where both lawmakers sought to justify their actions and statements.
- Rep. Mace posted multiple times on X (formerly Twitter), clarifying that her suggestion to “take it outside” was not a call to violence but rather an attempt to move the conversation to a less disruptive setting. She wrote:“Let me be clear: I wanted to take the conversation off the floor to have a more constructive conversation, not to fight.”
- Rep. Crockett, meanwhile, expressed feeling threatened and dismissed Mace as “an attention-seeking loser,” questioning the relevance of the debate to pressing issues such as the rising cost of living: “Last I checked, threatening members in a committee room doesn’t exactly reduce the cost of eggs.”

History of Escalating Tensions
This incident marks yet another clash in the House Oversight Committee, a venue increasingly known for its high-profile and often polarizing debates. In May, the same chamber witnessed chaos after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) insulted Rep. Crockett’s appearance, quipping about her “fake eyelashes.”
Committee Chair Comer defended Greene at the time, and his decision sparked further controversy when Crockett sarcastically inquired if similar personal attacks would also fall outside the rules.
Mace’s Legislative Focus on Transgender Issues
The exchange comes as Rep. Mace continues to make waves over her legislative efforts targeting transgender rights. Following the election of Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.), the first openly transgender member of Congress, Mace introduced a resolution to ban transgender women from using female bathrooms on Capitol Hill.

Mace later confirmed that her measure was specifically intended to address McBride’s election, further escalating partisan divides on the issue.
Calls for Civility Amid Rising Partisanship
As political tensions flare, questions about decorum and effectiveness in Congress have resurfaced. Analysts suggest that these disputes risk overshadowing substantive policy discussions and further eroding public trust in the legislative process.
