At the 2024 VMAs, Katy Perry delivered an unyielding speech while accepting the MTV Video Vanguard Award, urging her detractors to “touch grass” and asserting that “there are no decade-long accidents.”
“I’m genuinely thrilled when I observe the music scene today, filled with brilliant young artists who exude self-assurance, autonomy, vulnerability, and sincerity,” Katy Perry expressed after her remarkable performance. “I’ve heard countless ‘do this,’ ‘don’t say that,’ ‘show less,’ ‘cover up more,’ ‘don’t cut your hair.’ A major reason I stand here today is because I mastered the art of muting the relentless noise that every artist, particularly women in this industry, must combat daily.
“I want to tell you all with my whole heart—do whatever you need to stay genuine to yourself and your craft. Disconnect from social media, guard your mental well-being. Pause. Touch grass. And pursue the calling you were born for, just like I was born to do this.”
Her fervent speech followed a vibrant medley of her greatest hits, alongside teasers from her soon-to-release album “143,” set for debut on September 20. Introduced by her husband, Orlando Bloom, the performance was a celebratory showcase, with Perry soaring above her backup dancers and unveiling Doechii as a special guest.
Katy Perry’s speech took a humorous turn when she kicked off by asking the audience,
“Can you believe I pulled that off on day one of my period?” She later reflected on her legacy since bursting onto the mainstream scene with 2008’s One of the Boys, emphasizing that “so many elements must align to sustain a long, flourishing career as an artist.”
After expressing gratitude to her team, family, loyal KatyCats, and the LGBTQ+ community, Katy Perry playfully acknowledged Bloom for “doing the dishes”—a nod to her viral interview comment where she jested about rewarding men for mundane chores—and gave a heartfelt mention to their daughter, Daisy.
