The encounter began around 11 am, as Army and police teams intercepted the group following intelligence inputs on terrorist movement in the area, officials confirmed. The operation is part of a broader manhunt that began last week after the abduction and killing of two Village Defence Guards (VDGs) – Nazir Ahmad and Kuldeep Kumar.

According to reports, the joint search teams encountered gunfire upon reaching the Keshwan forest area, where three to four terrorists are suspected to be trapped. The Jammu-based White Knight Corps, the Army’s division operating in the region, posted an update on X (formerly Twitter) confirming the incident and noting that the joint operation in the Bhart Ridge area aimed to target the same group suspected in the recent VDG killings.

What Happened

In the initial gunfight clash, four soldiers sustained injuries and were promptly evacuated to a hospital; the condition of three remains critical, officials said. As of the latest updates, intermittent gunfire continues between the security forces and the suspected terrorists. Authorities have maintained a security perimeter as the operation progresses, underscoring the gravity of recent terrorist activity in the Kishtwar district.

The incident follows a comprehensive search effort launched last Thursday in the Kuntwara and Keshwan forests, where the terrorists are believed to have targeted and killed the two VDGs, sparking heightened security measures in the region.
